Author Q&A with Synithia Williams

1. What was the inspiration for your novel?
This story started with a “what if”, as most books do. I wanted to explore the idea of a woman trying to plan her love life after suffering heartbreak. Here’s a description of the story.

***
After several bad relationships, Kenyatta Copeland decides to
control her love life with the same discernment she uses in her professional
life.
Knowing firsthand the heartbreak that comes when desire and emotion rule a relationship, Kenyatta assumes marrying Brad Johnson will lead to a stable life. But as much as she believes she can plan her future, it’s hard to ignore the way her boss, Malcolm Patterson, ignites her passions with just one look. After Malcolm learns of her engagement, he makes a play for her heart and reminds her that passion between a man and a woman has its perks… but also its costs. When Brad suspects there’s more than work between Kenyatta and Malcolm, he works harder to keep Kenyatta by his side. Torn between her promise to marry Brad and her irrepressible longing for Malcolm, Kenyatta must decide if she can
live her life in a passionless marriage of convenience or once again trust her heart. Yet Brad isn’t as perfect as he seems, and by the time Kenyatta realizes this it may be too late.

2. When did you take up writing?
I’ve always been a writer, but I didn’t take is seriously until 2010. At that time I decided that if I really wanted to become an author I would have to devote more time to writing.

3. How important is setting/place in your writing?
My book is set in Columbia, SC. I’m a country girl and I like living in South Carolina, so it was important to me locate my story in a place that I love. The heat of the south also lends a perfect backdrop to my hot romances.

4. Do you have a favourite character (s) in your current novel?
Malcolm is my favourite character. He’s a fantasy of mine: a handsome, smart, African-American man in the environmental field.

My favourite secondary character is Kenyatta’s best friend Carol. She’s the type of friend we all need: one who isn’t afraid to tell us like it is.

5. What’s the best piece of writing advice you were ever given?
To learn everything I could about my genre. I thought that just because I read romance I understood how to write a romance novel. It was an eye opener after researching more about the romance industry to learn how much I didn’t know.

6. Do you have a schedule for writing?
Between my full time job, husband and our two boys, I write whenever I can! During the week I try to write every night after 9 p.m. I also keep a notebook with me to jot down story ideas and outlines whenever I have a free moment.

7. Are you a plotter or someone who tends to wing it?
Yes! I outline the entire story, but often the characters take me on a different route.

8. Can you name three of four of your current favourite books?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Twilight Breaking Dawn and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.

9. Can you tell me a little bit about what you are working on now?
I’m working on my third novel. The hero is the best friend of Malcolm from You Can’t Plan Love. He’s a small town doctor whose old flame comes back to town on a wave of scandal.

10. What advice would you give to a fledgling writer to assist them on their journey?
Keep writing and learn everything you can about writing and publishing. Just like I found out reading romances didn’t make me a romance expert, the same goes for writers in other genres. There’s too much information available for new writers claim ignorance.

That is one of the best written blurbs I’ve read in a long time; a window to the quality of this story, I’m thinking. A very engaging style makes a good story even better. Sounds like a must read. Nice to meet you.

I’m glad you enjoyed the blurb. Yes, I do believe it’s a window into the good things in the book, but I am partial 🙂

I agree Jenn…it’s always so good to discover new (to you) authors isn’t it?
